Sumir gengu fattlausir gegnum áramótin og urðu ekki varir við sekúnduna sem bætt var við veraldartímann. Aðrir hafa þá gáfu að geta skyggnst á bakvið hið smáa, einfalda.Í dag er það smáorðið „gegnum“ sem Jóna Hlíf varpar ljósi á. Orðið vísar til tíma og nær yfir atburði, en jafnframt hreyfingu. Við förum gegnum tímabil; brjótumst gegnum þau þegar illa lætur, en komumst einfaldlega gegnum þau þegar skár gengur. Í stofunni blasir skyndilega við veggur sem gerir upp á milli stofunnar og eldhússins. Eldhústhrællinn er kunnuglegt hlutverk sem við gegnum, en veggurinn yfir í náð stofunnar er gegnsær og þaraðauki er hægt ad ganga gegnum hann. Hann er bara í plati.
Áður hefur verid sagt um verk Jónu Hlífar að þau einkennist af barnslegri einlægni og einfaldleika, en hún hefur jöfnum höndum unnið við vídeóverk, málverk, textaverk og innsetningar. Verkið sem í dag birtist endurspeglar nokkur af einkennum hennar sem listakonu. Rendurnar sem strimlarnir birta minna á málverkin, og úr vídeóverkunum má rekast einbrotinn margfaldleika sem endurtekur sig hér.

Gegnum/Through is a site-specific installation that creates an imaginary "boundary" within a given space. By its very nature, the piece asks the audience to participate, whether willingly or not—simply by being there, the piece asks visitors to pass through the clear plastic stripes, and in this process, acknowledge an intervention that creates a false or artificial division of space. The piece demonstrates how a familiar space can be transformed, and yet also illustrates how boundaries and the distinction between one space and another are simply artificial constructs.
The transparency of the piece is integral to its meaning. The boundary is not meant to be aggressively present, but rather a suggestion; it is supposed to be there and yet not there. Its reflective quality is also meant to allow the viewer/participant to engage in a moment of self-reflection at the moment of passage: walking towards the self (the reflection), on the one hand, and yet beyond the self at the moment of crossing over.
The piece also plays on the word "gegnum," which in Icelandic has two meanings: "through" and "obey." In this sense, the clear plastic stripes not only create a boundary from which to pass through, but also articulate the presence of the artist in asking visitors to "obey" by acknowledging and passing through the curtain. The result is a moment of theater or performance that can be recreated in any location.
